Mumps, signs and symptoms of mumps
Thursday, August 13, 2009 10:03Mumps is generally observed in children in the age groups of 5 to 15 years. A virus called MYXOVIRUS PAROTIDITS (RNA) causes mumps. The source of infection is a person infected with mumps. The disease spread mainly by droplet method of transmission or by direct contact with an infected person. Incubation period varies from 2 to 3 weeks. Usually, it is 18 days.
Person affect with mumps will have pain in salivary gland- mostly the parotid glands. There will be pain in opening the mouth, ear ache and fever. The virus may even affect the pancreas and kidney. This is no specific treatment for mumps. However, taking vaccine against mumps can prevent the occurrence of mumps. Keeping the patient isolated from other till the symptoms subsides and disinfecting the articles used by the patient reduces spread of this disease.
